MS Dhoni Wants 25% CSK Stake as Ownership Talks Hit Roadblock.

Dhoni has been part of the Chennai Super Kings since the inaugural Indian Premier League season in 2008. He quickly became the face of the franchise and played a central role in turning CSK into one of the most successful teams in IPL history.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s long association with Chennai Super Kings could be heading into a new and unexpected phase. According to a report by an Indian national media outlet, the former CSK captain wants to remain closely connected with the franchise even after his playing career ends. However, discussions over a possible ownership stake have reportedly failed to produce an agreement.

The report claims that Dhoni expressed interest in buying a significant share of Chennai Super Kings, with his initial demand reportedly as high as 25 percent. CSK, however, is reportedly unwilling to sell such a large portion of the franchise to its legendary former captain.

The disagreement has allegedly created further tension between Dhoni and the franchise management. While the two sides have reportedly discussed several possible ownership percentages, they have not been able to reach a common ground.

Dhoni Wants to Stay Connected With CSK After Retirement

Dhoni has been part of the Chennai Super Kings since the inaugural Indian Premier League season in 2008. He quickly became the face of the franchise and played a central role in turning CSK into one of the most successful teams in IPL history.

Under Dhoni’s leadership, Chennai won multiple IPL titles and developed a reputation for consistency and strong team management. His relationship with the franchise has therefore gone far beyond that of an ordinary player and team.

As Dhoni approaches the final stage of his playing career, the idea of continuing his association with CSK after retirement has gained considerable attention.

According to the report, Dhoni wants to remain involved with Chennai in an ownership capacity. Rather than simply walking away from the franchise after his playing days, he is reportedly interested in becoming a shareholder.

Importantly, the report claims Dhoni did not ask to receive the shares for free. He reportedly wanted to purchase the stake.

Initial Demand Was Reportedly 25 Percent

The biggest point of disagreement appears to be the size of the proposed stake.

A person described as close to the CSK management reportedly said that Dhoni initially wanted to acquire 25 percent of the franchise. However, the Chennai Super Kings were not prepared to sell such a large portion of their ownership.

The franchise is reportedly willing to offer Dhoni a much smaller stake.

According to the report, CSK initially indicated that it would consider selling around 3 percent. Dhoni then reportedly reduced his demand to 20 percent during negotiations.

CSK, in response, allegedly increased its offer to 4 percent.

Even after that movement from both sides, the discussions did not lead to an agreement.

Three Rounds of Negotiations Failed to Produce a Deal

The reported negotiations appear to have gone through several stages.

Dhoni’s first reported proposal was for a 25 percent stake. After CSK rejected that level of ownership, he reportedly lowered his demand to 20 percent.

The franchise reportedly responded with an offer of 4 percent.

When that failed to settle the issue, discussions continued. Dhoni then allegedly reduced his demand again, this time to 18 percent.

However, CSK reportedly remained unwilling to sell more than 5.5 percent of its ownership.

That difference is substantial. Dhoni was reportedly looking for a significant role in the franchise, while the CSK management appeared interested in offering only a minority stake.

As a result, the negotiations reportedly reached another dead end.

No Formal Written Proposal Was Reportedly Made

One particularly important detail is that the reported discussions were apparently conducted verbally.

The person quoted in the report claimed that neither Dhoni nor CSK submitted a formal written proposal during the negotiations. That means the reported percentages and terms were part of discussions rather than a finalized business agreement.

This distinction is important because the information provided does not indicate that Dhoni has officially become a shareholder in Chennai Super Kings.

The report also suggests that CSK may have its own long-term plans for the franchise’s ownership structure. Those plans could explain why the management has reportedly resisted Dhoni’s request for a much larger stake.

Dhoni’s Extraordinary CSK Legacy

Dhoni’s desire to remain associated with CSK would hardly come as a surprise given his history with the franchise.

He joined Chennai in the IPL’s first season and became the team’s most iconic captain. His leadership helped establish CSK as one of the competition’s dominant franchises.

Dhoni also holds several major records for the team. He has played more IPL matches for Chennai than any other player and has been one of the franchise’s most recognizable figures since 2008.

For CSK supporters, Dhoni is closely associated with the team’s identity. His leadership, calm decision-making, and success in high-pressure situations helped create the franchise’s unique image.

That is why a possible transition from player to shareholder would be significant for both Dhoni and CSK.

Dhoni’s Playing Future Is Also a Major Question

While ownership discussions are reportedly taking place, Dhoni’s playing career remains another major topic.

At this stage of his career, he is no longer playing the same role he did during his peak years. Injuries and fitness concerns have also limited his appearances.

CSK retained Dhoni for ₹4 crore at the 2025 IPL mega auction. The decision allowed him to continue his association with the franchise, although his on-field opportunities have become increasingly limited.

The report states that Dhoni did not play a single match for CSK in the most recent IPL season mentioned in the original report.

That situation naturally raises questions about what comes next.

Could Dhoni Have a Future Beyond Playing?

If the reported ownership talks are accurate, Dhoni may be considering a future with CSK that extends beyond his role as a cricketer.

Becoming a shareholder could allow him to remain connected with the franchise while taking on a different role after retirement. His knowledge of the team, understanding of the IPL, and enormous popularity among supporters could make such a transition highly significant.

However, the reported gap between Dhoni’s preferred stake and CSK’s offer remains enormous.

Dhoni is said to have moved from 25 percent to 20 percent and then to 18 percent. CSK, meanwhile, reportedly moved from an initial 3 percent offer to 4 percent, then to a maximum of 5.5 percent.

Unless one side changes its position substantially, reaching a deal could remain difficult.

CSK and Dhoni’s Relationship Faces an Uncertain Moment

Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings have shared one of the most successful partnerships in IPL history. Their relationship has survived changes in players, coaches, and team strategies over the years.

But the reported ownership dispute introduces a new dimension to that relationship.

It is important to note that the reported negotiations have not resulted in a confirmed ownership deal, and the claims about the discussions have not been presented here as an official announcement from Dhoni or CSK.

For now, Dhoni remains associated with Chennai as a player. Whether he can eventually become an owner or shareholder in the franchise is still uncertain.

What is clear is that Dhoni does not appear ready to leave the CSK family entirely when his playing career eventually ends. The question is whether the Chennai Super Kings are prepared to give their legendary captain the level of ownership he reportedly wants.
