The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 is set to kick off on March 22, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued stringent guidelines for all players, including star cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. After India lost in the Test series against Australia, the BCCI rolled out 10 guidelines for national players earlier. Now, the board has extended its strict regulations to the IPL, implementing 15 mandatory rules for all 10 teams. Non-compliance may result in penalties.
Key Guidelines Issued by BCCI for IPL 2024
1. Limited Practice Nets
Each team will have access to two central practice nets. An additional net will be provided on the side wicket for power-hitting practice. If two teams practice simultaneously at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, both teams will receive only two nets instead of three.
2. Restrictions on Open Nets
Practice sessions in open nets are strictly prohibited under any circumstances.
3. Exclusive Practice Areas
Once a team completes its practice session, the next team must use its designated nets. Teams cannot switch nets between sessions.
4. No Match-Day Practice
Teams are not allowed to conduct practice sessions on the day of a match.
5. No Fitness Tests on Match Days
Fitness tests on the central wicket are strictly banned on match days.
6. Strict Access Control
Only individuals with official BCCI-issued photo ID cards can enter the dressing room and practice areas. Cricketers’ family and friends must arrive separately and remain in designated viewing areas. Additional throw-down specialists or net bowlers must be pre-approved by the board.
7. Team Travel Protocol
All players must travel in the designated team bus. Teams may use two buses if necessary.
8. Written Permission for Match-Day Requests
Any request related to practice or fitness tests on match day must be submitted in writing and approved by the field manager.
9. Mandatory Photo ID on Match Days
Players and staff must carry their BCCI-issued photo IDs. A first-time failure to comply will result in a warning, while a second violation will lead to a team fine.
10. Protection of LED Boards
Players must avoid striking the ball repeatedly against the LED boards in the stadium.
11. Restrictions on Seating Near LED Boards
No player or staff member can sit near the LED boards during a match. Those responsible for carrying water and towels must stay in designated sponsor-provided areas.
12. Compliance with Orange and Purple Cap Rules
The holders of the Orange Cap (highest run-scorer) and Purple Cap (highest wicket-taker) must wear their caps during the match. If a player refuses, they must at least wear the cap for the first two overs, as they will be shown on the broadcast.
13. Dress Code for Prize Distribution
Players cannot wear sleeveless jerseys during post-match award ceremonies. A first offence will result in a warning, while a repeat violation will result in a fine.
14. Limited Support Staff
Each team is allowed a maximum of 12 support staff members per match. Every staff member must have a BCCI-issued photo ID. Teams may include one doctor within this 12-member group.
15. Jersey Number Change Notification
If players wish to change their jersey number, they must inform the board at least 24 hours before the match.

The much-anticipated IPL 2024 season begins on March 22, with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders taking on Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening match.
