Eva Perón, widely known as Evita, remains one of the most recognisable political figures in Argentine history. She died in July 1952 at just 33, but her influence did not end with her death.
In fact, the story of what happened to her body after she died became almost as remarkable as her political life.
For 16 years, Eva Perón’s embalmed body was moved, hidden, buried under a false name and eventually returned to Argentina. Her remains became the focus of political fear, devotion and mystery during one of the most turbulent periods in the country’s history.
Her extraordinary journey finally ended in 1976, when she was placed inside a heavily protected crypt in Buenos Aires.
Who Was Eva Perón?
Eva Perón rose from a poor rural background to become Argentina’s First Lady after marrying President Juan Perón. Through her charitable work and political activism, she developed a powerful connection with Argentina’s working class.
To millions of supporters, Evita represented hope and social justice.
Her political influence became closely associated with Peronism, the movement built around the ideas and leadership of Juan and Eva Perón. The movement promoted social welfare, economic nationalism and a strong connection with the working class.
Because of her enormous popularity, Eva became much more than a political figure. She became a national symbol.
That symbolic power would become extremely important after her death.
How Eva Perón’s Body Was Preserved
Eva Perón died on July 26, 1952, after suffering from cervical cancer.
Only hours after her death, Spanish anatomist Dr Pedro Ara began the complicated process of preserving her body. The Argentine government wanted her remains to be maintained in a condition similar to the preserved bodies of Soviet leaders Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin.
Ara used preservation techniques involving substances such as paraffin and glycerin. The result was reportedly remarkably lifelike.
Her body was initially displayed at the Ministry of Labour building in Buenos Aires. A huge memorial was planned, with a glass coffin intended to become her permanent resting place.
The public response was extraordinary.
More than two million mourners reportedly came to see her coffin during the 14 days it remained on public display.
For her supporters, Evita’s death was not simply the loss of a political leader. It was the loss of someone they regarded almost as a spiritual figure.
A Military Coup Changed Everything
Three years after Eva’s death, Argentina’s political landscape changed dramatically.
In September 1955, President Juan Perón was overthrown by a military coup and went into exile. The new military government wanted to eliminate symbols associated with Peronism.
Eva Perón’s body was considered one of the most powerful of those symbols.
The authorities feared that her remains could become a rallying point for Peronist resistance. As a result, they secretly removed her body from the memorial site in central Buenos Aires.
That decision began a bizarre 16-year journey.
Evita’s Body Was Hidden Across Buenos Aires
After the military took possession of Eva Perón’s coffin, officials struggled to find a safe place to keep it.
Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Moori Koenig, who was associated with military intelligence, reportedly moved the body between different locations because he feared Peronist supporters might attempt to recover it.
Stories from the period claim that the coffin was hidden in unexpected places, including a vehicle parked on city streets, behind a cinema screen and near a water-supply facility.
Wherever the coffin went, something strange reportedly happened.
Flowers and candles would sometimes appear nearby.
Nobody could establish with certainty who had left them there.
The secrecy surrounding the body eventually became part of the legend surrounding Evita. Her supporters wanted her returned, while the authorities feared that even her dead body could inspire political resistance.
The Controversial Carlos Moori Koenig Story
Accounts of what happened during this period vary considerably.
Some former military officials later claimed that Moori Koenig developed an unhealthy fascination with Eva Perón’s preserved body.
Historian Cecilia Macón later pointed out how difficult it is to separate fact from legend in Evita’s story. Over the decades, myths and historical events became deeply intertwined.
Eventually, the military decided that the safest solution was to remove the body from Argentina entirely.
In 1957, Eva Perón’s remains were secretly transported to Italy.
Eva Perón Was Buried Under a False Name
In Italy, Eva Perón was buried in Milan under the false name María Maggi de Magistris.
For years, the location of her grave remained a closely guarded secret.
Meanwhile, Peronist supporters in Argentina continued demanding answers.
One phrase reportedly appeared on walls around Buenos Aires:
“Where is Eva Perón’s body?”
The question became a powerful political slogan.
The military government had hoped that hiding the body would weaken Evita’s symbolic power. Instead, the disappearance helped make her even more legendary.
The Return of Eva Perón’s Body
By the early 1970s, Argentina’s political situation was changing again.
In 1971, a government seeking a return to democratic rule agreed to return Eva Perón’s remains to her husband, Juan Perón, who was living in exile in Spain.
A coffin containing Evita’s body was eventually delivered to the Perón residence near Madrid.
Carlos Spadone, a close associate of Juan Perón, later recalled being among the first people to see the remains after their return.
The body had suffered damage during its years of secret storage and transportation.
Members of Perón’s household carefully cleaned and looked after the remains.
Even at this stage, however, stories surrounding Evita continued to grow.
Political Myth and Spiritual Belief
One of the more dramatic stories from this period involved José López Rega, a former minister who was known for his interest in mystical and supernatural beliefs.
According to one account, López Rega wanted Isabel Perón, Juan Perón’s third wife, to lie beside Eva’s body so that she could somehow absorb Evita’s political charisma.
There is no simple way to establish every detail of such stories. They became part of the larger mythology surrounding Eva Perón.
For many Peronists, her influence had reached a level that went beyond ordinary politics.
For her opponents, however, she remained an intensely controversial figure.
This sharp divide helped explain why her body became such a politically sensitive object even decades after her death.
Eva Perón Finally Returned to Argentina
Juan Perón returned to Argentina in 1973 and once again became president. Isabel Perón served as his vice president.
Eva’s body, however, remained in Spain.
When Juan Perón died suddenly in 1974, Eva’s remains were finally brought back to Buenos Aires.
But another challenge remained.
Her body needed restoration after years of movement, burial and damage.
The Dangerous Task of Restoring Evita
The Argentine government turned to Domingo Teyiechia, a specialist who worked on the restoration of artworks, archaeological objects and human remains.
According to his later account, two men approached him and asked him to restore Eva Perón’s body.
The task was extremely dangerous.
Argentina was experiencing a period of political violence and state repression. Teyiechia later recalled receiving threats and said that his car was set on fire.
Despite the danger, he accepted the assignment.
His job was to repair the physical damage and restore Eva Perón’s appearance as carefully as possible.
The restoration became the final major stage in the extraordinary history of her remains.
Evita’s Final Resting Place
In October 1976, Eva Perón was finally laid to rest.
This time, authorities wanted to make absolutely certain that her remains could never again be stolen or secretly moved.
Her coffin was placed inside a highly secure crypt beneath the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires, where she remains today.
The burial site was designed with multiple layers of protection. A hidden entrance and underground chamber were incorporated into the structure, making access to the coffin extremely difficult.
Eva Perón had died 24 years earlier, but the fear surrounding her symbolic power remained strong enough to justify extraordinary security measures.
Why Eva Perón’s Body Became So Important
The story of Eva Perón’s stolen body is not simply a strange historical mystery.
It reflects the enormous political and emotional power she held in Argentina.
The military government believed that controlling her remains could weaken Peronism. Instead, the disappearance transformed her body into an even more powerful symbol.
For supporters, the treatment of Evita’s remains represented the persecution of the working class and the destruction of their political movement.
For opponents, her legacy represented a controversial chapter in Argentina’s political history.
Either way, Eva Perón remained impossible to erase.
Her body travelled from Buenos Aires to Italy, from Italy to Spain and eventually back to Argentina. It was hidden, moved, buried under a false identity and restored before finally being secured underground.
More than seven decades after her death, the story of Eva Perón’s missing body continues to fascinate historians and the public.
Evita may have died at only 33, but the struggle over her remains proved one thing: her political influence survived long after her heart stopped beating.
