As the world bids adieu to the renowned artist Pankaj Udhas in the tranquil land of Chirghum at the age of 72, the sad echo of ghazals fades. The news of his death was confirmed by his daughter, Nayab Udhas, who said, “It is with deep sorrow that I inform you that Padma Shri artist Pankaj Udhas passed away on February 26.”

Childhood and musical origins



Pankaj Udhas was the youngest of Keshubhai and Jituben Udhas’ three children, born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, Gujarat. His ancestors’ connections to music made his musical journey possible. Upon realizing his love for music, Keshubhai enrolled him at Rajkot’s famed music academy. After receiving his initial training in tabla, Pankaj studied classical music with Ghulam Qadir Khan. His insatiable curiosity about music took him to Mumbai, where he sought advice from Gwalior genre legend Nabarang Nagpurkar.

Musical Odyssey: From Impoverished Origins to Superstar Status
In the movie “Hum Tum Aur Oh,” Pankaj Udhas made his musical debut. But it was in 1986—the year of the movie “Naam” and its soul-stirring hit “Chitthi Aayi Hyey”—that he reached the pinnacle of fame. This fantastic song, which became an anthem of the 1980s, immortalized his name in the hearts of music lovers.
