The world said goodbye to the renowned Bollywood ghazal vocalist Pankaj Udhas on February 26, when he quietly left the music industry at the age of 72. The great artist had fought a protracted illness before entering an eternal sleep.

A Magnificent Career Throughout the 1980s



Throughout the 1980s, Pankaj Udhas dominated the music landscape, enthralling audiences with heartfelt performances in plays, albums, and motion pictures. His name became ingrained in the hearts of fans with timeless hits like “Chandi Jayasa Rang,” “Na Kajre Ki Dhar,” “Deewaron Se Mil Kar Rona,” “Ahista,” “Thodi Thodi Pyar Karo,” and “Niklo Na Benkab.” His catalog features critically regarded albums including “Humsafar,” “Nasha,” “Paymana,” and “Hasrat.”

Early Life and Musical Origins


Pankaj Udhas was the youngest of Keshubhai and Jituben Udhas’ three children, born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, Gujarat. His family supported his love of music as it began. Keshubhai registered the children at the Rajkot Music Institute after observing their excitement. After receiving his initial training in tabla, Pankaj went to Ghulam Qadir Khan for advice in classical music. One of the most important turning points in his musical development was moving to Mumbai to receive advanced training from renowned Gwalior performer Nabarang Nagpurkar.

Path to Stardom: Hum Tum Aur Oh, Nam, and Saajan Pankaj Udhas began his career as a film song performer with “Hum Tum Aur Oh.” But the performance of “Chiththi Aayi Hey” in the 1986 movie “Naam” that brought him to the highest level of recognition was his heartfelt rendering of the song. The popularity of “Jie To Jee” from the movie “Saajan” in 1991 marked yet another significant event and cemented the song’s status as one of the high points of his remarkable career.

Pankaj Udhas received many accolades during his life, both domestically and abroad. He received the coveted Padma Shri award from the Indian government in 2006, which recognized his enormous contributions to the music industry.
